Human Interest Story

Check out this feature story that recently ran in the Huntington [IN] Herald Press. Notice the excellent quotes that were gathered…and imagine the legwork that went into obtaining all of these quotes. Notice that this writer took a News story (Mike Perkins stepping down as editor to accept a new position at Parkview Hospital) and turned it into a feature story (his impact on the people he worked with).

Also, consider that you can tell a human interest story without using words. A Chicago Tribune photographer had been visiting a family far outside of the city for years, taking photos of this family’s life. When the family decided to sell their farm and move on, the same photographer returned to the old farm a few years later to what had become a new subdivision. Here he shares pictures of the before and after. What story does this photo essay tell?

First Try

All right, well, it’s blogging try No. 1. Will it work? Will it help? My hope is to use this page to help you pick the “current events” you should be familiar with. I will try and post 2-3 stories each day that I think are relevant or very well written. Hopefully they will be a springboard for class discussion and our own story ideas. Also, feel free to add comments and links of your own to stories you think others would find particularly important. Let’s give it a shot!
